Updated 3/23/14:
They've apparently released some updates and I can now get this app to launch on all of my Windows 8 and RT devices. I would have given it 5 stars if hadn't been 'broken' for about a year.
--
This was originally a great app. So good that I paid for the upgrade. However, it now either takes several minutes to launch on my Dell Win RT tablet, or won't launch at all on my Surface Pro 2. I give up. Sadly, gone are the days when this was useful. Uninstalling it.

Took a very long time to download and now it will not start. It delivers live information but that is all. This is the first Windows 8 app that I have downloaded on my ASUS Laptop that does not work. I will remove it. C'mon developers, this app sounds cool and could have retail worth if you could make it work for all.

Direct X11 compatible graphics card recommended.

Please fix the bugs.
2.Updated at Sep.16 2013
It has been got better in this version , however,It still takes too long to load this app-almost longer than 30 seconds at my computer. It didn't toke so longer before.

Great looking app. Running this on the Surface RT, one problem is the compass is almost 180 degrees wrong, so using AR mode is almost useless. Other apps get the compass right, so don't know what is going on here.
4 July 2013
Piecemeal charges for crappy upgrades. Names of constellations cut in half so that you cannot see all letters. Poor functionality for the price. Hoping the new upgrade won't lock up my Surface. Red shift on iPad is still the best app.

Can get a little sideways at times, so you do not want to rely on this as your only APP to view what's going on in the heavens/cosmos. The other reviewers are correct that it goes down for long periods of time (~90 days for me) on all of the 4 computers I had it installed on. Sounds like a common problem, and begging for help apparently gets you nowhere. It is still worth the pain, in my opinion. This is rapidly evolving territory, and some patience and respect for the process are required by the user. Know this before you buy, and have a solid back-up like Stellarium and/or 3D SkyORB. Both are good in a pinch, but I still prefer Star Chart for Win8, Droid, and iPad. If you want a really accurate look, grab the MS World Wide Telescope and related ASCOM add-ins. It will blow your socks off if you are easily geeked! Thanks to the EVL gang for finally getting this working again. XOXO

This is really a great app, but it's really too bad that the Surface (both Pro and RT) has a useless compass, making the augmented reality feature meaningless. When facing north, my Surface Pro reports that I'm facing southwest. The RT was completely wrong too, though I admit I don't remember which direction it was wrong in.

I have enjoyed the start chart and the accessories. Highly recommended and they actually get back to you with answers.
**** This is an update: My has crashed too. I have read the Tech support is in need of assistance. I have an observation to make. I installed Windows 8.1 three weeks earlier with no problems with star chart. Then I went on a trip (San Diego to Boston) and changed my Long and Lat.. Upon making these changes on 18 December, I was able to call it one last time before crashing. I have not been able to access Star Chart since. Hope this helps.
Update: Outstanding! The fix works great and I am very satisfied.
12 July 2013
Hope they fix it soon
3 November 2014
I've actually used this to orient myself to the night sky. The zoom and special object catalogue data is awesome App also shows all the constellations and our path taken through them on our trip around the Sun. For anyone with stars in their eyes!

I'm a Physics major, and this app is AMAZING!

First off, thanks using Star Chart and apologies for the current issue. We’re aware that our latest version has a serious crash for some Win 8.1 users on launch, and we are working as hard as we can to fix it quickly. However, we’re unable to recreate the crash here in our offices on our many Windows machines. As a result, we are getting help from both Microsoft and Intel to try and resolve the issue as soon as possible.
We’ll have a fix for this shortly, but we can’t give you an eta just yet - hopefully no more than a couple of days. Thanks for your patience and again apologies for the inconvenience.
Kind regards,
San Shepherd

App won't open after latest update. Not good. It's too bad, since this was one of the best apps that I've used. :-/

This really is a great app, especially for the space nerd in all of us. Many reviews include complaints that the compass is incorrect in AR mode. This isn't a problem with the app, as it can only work with data from the magnetometer. This is an issue with other hardware beyond Surface, and may be due to local interference. The fix is simple - rotate the device (Surface in my case) over each axis a few times, rotate 90 degrees to "confuse" the sensor. A few times and you'll see it slowly adjust!

Wont let you do much if you don't upgrade in each section which all together would cost around 50.00

it is quitting as soon I open it what to do?.

This app has a lot of potential to be a lot more useful but it's definitely a great start. You can actually turn certain layers on and off by using the Settings charm (Win+C to get charms bar). Searching by object name would be very useful as well as manually setting a specific time.

will not load anymore will remove it eventually

I've never seen an app that makes you want to re-engage reality. This one works laying in your bed and makes you want to go outside and see the stars yourself. I'm sure you are an astronomer you could find some technical fault with this but for the average city dweller this is fantastic! Has all kinds of constellations I didn't even know existed! No complaints here. Thanks for getting us back outside!

IT IS A GREAT APP BUT YOU SHOULDNT HAVE TO PAY FOR ALL OF THE GOOD STUFF
20 October 2013
I had hopes for this, being it's nearly 600MB, and would've upgraded if it was good. But it doesn't even come close to touching my SkySafari Pro for Android. For the size they should be very near the same. Like more DSO catalogs, better than blurry pixelated views of DSO's, and if I say I want to explore the moon or another planet, an ability to zoom in to closer than a 2" ball on a 15" screen is necessary. Come on.
What is it going to take for Win8 app developers to quit with the Mickey Mouse apps that are written only for children and start writing serious apps?
24 September 2013
Beautiful app, especially since they fixed issues with touch targets on the surface pro.

the main issue is the fact that the compass on this app off by about 90 degrees. yes there are some "fixes" but my friends on their tablets do not have this issue. Not bad but still not the way it should work.

This app could be great but it currently has one enormous deal breaker of a problem. It pegs the cpu at 100%. This is not acceptable - it causes the machine to run hot, kills the battery, and is not friendly to anything else running on the system. I won't use this app until that is fixed.
